Program Description

This is a quarterly meeting of the LMFT Consortium of the Central Coast Region. The Consortium comprises educational programs offering degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy, community mental health agencies, treatment programs, hospitals and other eligible practicum sites for student trainees. This meeting is also open to LMFTs, LPCCs and LCSWs in the Central Coast Region who would like to attend to better understand the local mental health community.

The meeting always includes a briefing by representatives from the Board of Behavioral Sciences and the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to discuss current and future legislation that may impact our field. This is followed by a panel discussion or presentation on a topic appropriate to the practice of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Two Continuing Education Units will be offered free of charge compliments of the Pacifica Extension Program at Pacifica Graduate Institute, which is approved by the BBS and CAMFT to offer CEUs to LMFTs, LCSWs and LPCCs. If you wish to receive CEUs, please plan to stay online for the entire meeting and complete an evaluation at the end of the course. You will the link to the evaluation form from Michele Wolf (mwolf@pacifica.edu). No CEUs will be issued without the evaluation being returned.

CEC Learning Objectives:

  1. Assess the constituents in the mental health community of the greater Central Coast Region and how these institutions/individuals interact in mutual support of the community’s mental health service offerings.
  2. Analyze how training programs can better prepare students to advance in the field of marriage and family therapy.
  3. Discuss how educational programs can better equip students for the practicum stage of their training as future LMFTs.
  4. Analyze how improved coordination between educational and training programs creates an enhanced training experience and improved preparation of student trainees.
  5. Discuss existing regulations and how to operate ethically and legally as LMFTs.
  6. Assess potential future regulations and how constituents might need to adapt to meet the changing regulatory environment.
  7. Discuss the relationship between C. G. Jung’s notion of unconscious complexes in analytical psychology and Aaron Beck’s cognitive model.
  8. Expand flexibility in utilizing both Jungian-oriented depth psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy in the clinical setting.

About the Presenter

Joanna Walling, M.A., LMFT, is a licensed psychotherapist and Pacifica alumni working in private practice. She serves as a Research Associate in Pacifica’s MA Counseling Psychology department. Practicing since 2012, Joanna received her early training in community mental health as a bilingual therapist serving low-income individuals and families living with severe mental illness. Her current research interests explore theoretical integration, examining the intersection of Jungian-oriented psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and somatic psychotherapy. In her spare time Joanna enjoys working on her photographic portfolio reimagining photography by capturing California abstract landscapes.

This program meets qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for Psychologists through the California Psychological Association (PAC014) Pacifica Graduate Institute is approved by the California Psychological Association to provide continuing education for psychologists. Continuing Education Goal. Pacifica Graduate Institute is committed to offering continuing education courses to train LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs to treat any client in an ethically and clinically sound manner based upon current accepted standards of practice. Course completion certificates will be awarded at the conclusion of the training and upon participant’s submission of his or her completed evaluation.
