Mary Watkins is a depth and liberation psychologist, educator, and scholar-activist whose work has significantly expanded the horizons of contemporary analytical psychology. Initially influenced by C.G. Jung and James Hillman, she later entered into sustained dialogue with the work of liberation thinkers such as Paulo Freire, Ignacio Martín-Baró, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Frantz Fanon, bringing depth psychology into conversation with decolonial, community, and ecological concerns. Rejecting a strict divide between inner and outer worlds, Watkins has emphasized the mutual interweaving of psyche, culture, history, and ecology, helping to reposition depth psychology within broader struggles for justice and collective healing. She is Professor Emerita at Pacifica Graduate Institute where she co-founded the Depth psychology Program and its Community, Liberation, Indigenous and Eco-Psychologies.
